Your first 30 days in Tokyo: checklist
The short answer
Everything starts with registering your address. Until you do, you can't get a bank account, a phone contract or health insurance. It also has a deadline, 14 days after you move in, so do it first.

Days 1–3
- Get online with a travel eSIM. See SIM cards.
- Decide where you'll live. If it's temporary, check you can register that address.
Within 14 days of moving in
- Register your address at the ward office. Bring your residence card; the address on it is updated at the same time (Immigration Services Agency).
- At the same counter, join National Health Insurance if you won't get insurance through work.
- Sign up for the National Pension if you won't get a pension through work.
Late registration can lead to a fine (Ota City). Going a long time without registering an address can even put your residence status at risk (explainer).
Week 2
- Get a voice SIM so you have a Japanese phone number. See SIM cards.
- Open a bank account. See bank accounts.
- When your My Number notice arrives, apply for a My Number Card.
Weeks 3–4
- Put electricity, gas, water and internet in your name.
- Check your ward's trash rules. Days and sorting differ by ward.
- Choose how to send money home. See sending money.
- Find a clinic and a hospital near your home.
